7 Dogs Playing Poker Tin Sign

Seven formally dressed dogs gather around a card table with drinks, cigars, chips, and the grave expressions of men who have been bluffing since dinner.

The image belongs to the long cultural life of Cassius Marcellus Coolidge’s poker-dog paintings, which turned dogs imitating middle-class human behavior into one of America’s most recognized forms of kitsch. The Smithsonian records Coolidge’s card-playing dog imagery, and the larger series became famous through mass-produced advertising prints and calendars.

Hang it in a game room, bar, office, or den where high art is welcome but not permitted to become tiresome.

The Sign Details
